Flat Roof

A flat roof is a horizontal or nearly horizontal roof of a building. A building with a more typical pitched roof naturally shifts water by virtue of the angle the pitched roof makes, however a flat roof has no such advantage. Water sitting on a flat roof for any length of time can lead to a leaky roof. It is important to have a material that provides an effective barrier to moisture on your flat roof to effectively prevent water entering the building.

Rubber roofing is one way of prevent moisture penetration. Rubber roofing consists of a membrane that is made of a synthetic material that resists water. It is usually fastened to your roof structure by glue, and comes in variable widths allowing your whole roof to be covered without joins.

Another material is Fibreglass or GRP. Properly installed, Fibreglass roofing can outlast other roofing materials by years or even decades. Genrally maintenance free, Fibreglass is more expensive than rubber roofing, however this is offset by increased life expectancy, and less subseptibility to damage.

Some flat roofs are made into Green roofs. Green roofs are roofs covered with vegetation planted on top of the waterproofing membrane. The vegetation absorbs the rain water thus preventing the build up of moisture that can lead to leaks.

Flat roofs are usually cheaper than pitched roofs, however they can require more frequent maintenance. In warm climates, flat roofs can be a good choice as they allow full use of the space in your building. Flat roofs can also be used as an extension of your living area, with a deck or terrace on the roof.

In colder climates, pitched roofs tend to be favoured as snow and rain flow off easier. Flat roofs need regular inspection to ensure that the moisture barrier is not damaged. It is always better and cheaper to catch a problem early on before costly flat roof repairs become necessary.
